Exploring Yakutania Point | Skagway, AK

Let’s go on a virtual hike since most of us aren’t venturing out any longer.

During our brief foray into Skagway, AK we asked some of the rangers in the national park visitor center in town if there was a hiking trail nearby. We’d exhausted our patience for walking up and down the main drag in town and really needed to do something before we got back on the ship for the evening. The rangers gave us some vague directions to get to a hiking trail just past the airport and when we found this sign we knew we’d made it to the right place.

And onto Yakutania Point. The tsunami signs seen around lower points in Alaska were a little unnerving.

And then we headed towards Yakutania Point itself via a rather wide and well-worn trail.

The terrain changed as we neared the point into a slight uphill with rocks, creating a nice diversion from the flat terrain.

Of course Forest was enamored with the rocks and wanted to climb on all of them. I was more hesitant than usual because I didn’t particular want an injured kid during our trip!

The views were not disappointing when we arrived towards the point with views to the water and mountains across the way.

The point itself proved to be a perfect place to sit in the sun and admire the surroundings while Forest could also do a little rock scrambling while we took in the sights.

It was easy to ponder and want to explore far off mountains and see beyond Skagway. Maybe even paddle through the bays and coves around the area.

The point proved to be fairly popular but not overly crowded with other cruise visitors venturing to the point and another group of young 20 somethings having a picnic around the corner from the point.

We continued our hike on the trails after but that will be for another day.
