The Irises of Spring

Iris season came and went pretty quickly in our yard. I say quickly, but in reality it was just that I was barely down near the pond during their blooming period so I wasn’t exactly noticing their blooms. I spent a lot more of my time up in the edible garden working on those beds there and trying to stay on top of it all–which of course I have not stayed on top of it all. I’m far behind on so much and will likely never catch up this season. I was thinking a bit the other day about how much time I used to spend outside before I had Forest, even some of the time after he was born. I’m just not capable of that anymore between being firmly in my 40s and getting tired a lot easier but also because Forest has his own needs. I’ve long (well, mostly) come to terms with not having a picture-perfect garden these days, though I do dream of at least having a week period when the paths are weeded, the gardens are mulched and blooming, and everything looks spectacular! That’s not likely to happen any time soon so I’ll just accept the messiness and delight in the blooms while I can.

In this part of the country, it is almost impossible to keep anything totally weeded. My goal always is to get as much done before the heat sets in…so I guess I’m done.

For whatever reason, this spring has whizzed by for me, too. I realize that it actually has lingered a little longer than it sometimes does, but still… it’s almost Memorial Day! Your irises certainly are pretty. I missed the bloom down at San Bernard this year, too. Ah, well.
