    January at Westcave Preserve

I finally got around to finishing this video I shot back in January when Chris and I were in Austin. I’m having serious outdoor exploration withdrawls these days—the heat paired with being pregnant and unable/not feeling up to hike and get out of town has me missing this kind of stuff. Good thing my yard has a diversity of things to keep me entertained until fall and the baby arrives.

Cyrtopodium punctatum | Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park

The first time I saw a cigar orchid was on private property at my job in Florida. I had walked by it without realizing it was an orchid until I walked back by it later on and it registered that it was a cigar orchid. They aren’t all that common but since seeing that first one I’ve gotten the chance to see a few others in Fakahatchee as well as the specimen that is probably the most well known down in Everglades NP.

    False Dragonhead Blooms

For the last month these blooms have been brightening up the flower bed directly in front of the house. We have at least two separate plants, one labeled Physostegia correllii and one labeled Physostegia digitalis corellii, but we believe they are both considered to be the Corell’s false dragonhead, which is a rare and endangered plant. I can’t remember where we bought them, maybe the SFA plant sale back in April, but they are in cultivation. The bloom stalks are extremely tall, in the 5-6′ range, though ours are now bent over and winding from rain storms and wind over the last month. I’ve definitely noticed that bumblebees visit the…

    100 Happy Days: Days 35-47

Day 35: No photo… Day 36: A little hidden treasure in the baby’s closet. Day 37: A small shower for the baby held by my friend Erika (far right) with two of my friends from college. Good times and great cake! Day 38: The beggar bunny, Samson. Day 39: Harvested the garlic and it actually formed bulbs! Downside—should have harvested two weeks prior to this and I would have had more. Instead, some rotted. Day 40: No photo Day 41: Devouring Written In My Own Heart’s Blood Day 42: Dancing lady ginger bloomed! Day 43: No photo Day 44: Making spaghetti sauce Day 45: Quart of honey from the hive…

    Leek Flowers

I think this weekend I need to find a use for the remaining leeks we have in our garden. Earlier this month I used them in a leek and potato soup, salsa, and just chopping a plant up and tossing it in some beans and rice. Their blooms are almost fading and the plants themselves really need to be eaten. Maybe I’ll toss some into a pasta sauce or have Chris grill some with fish. They really have some magnificent blooms, though! Bigger and bolder than the onions and garlic, for sure. Also, I’m giving some seeds away over at Sprout Dispatch this week. Drop by and put your name…

    100 Happy Days: Days 24-34

Day 24: Watching The Big Bang Theory after an evening mowing the yard. Day 25: Mr. Stripey playing a game of ‘You Can’t See Me’ as I was working in the yard that evening. Day 26: I love the light that comes through my front windows this time of year. Day 27: A good tomato harvest and a few peaches off the trees. The peaches were stuck to the limbs which is why they look black at the top. They tasted pretty great, too! Day 28: At my parent’s house. My dad showing off how he gets to pet the cat Kylee but just about no one else is allowed…

Janes Scenic Drive Ramble | Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park

Zebra longwing butterfly, Heliconius charithonia A weedy but beautiful native, Bidens alba. Firebush, Hamelia patens Northern needleaf bromeliad, Tillandsia balbisiana On our last day of our swamping trek through Fakahatchee Strand back in early March, I spent most of the morning hanging out at the parking area on Janes Scenic Drive at the East Main Tram gate. Chris was going out into the swamp with a few of the others that morning and I was not up for another morning in the swamp. I was still dealing with some mild morning sickness and general malaise at that time and preferred to just soak in the time spent at the cabin…

    Star Gazing

Somehow these lilies have evaded the deer this season. I’m not sure how or why, but they did. They tempted me for days with their buds, slowly swelling and then opening up to the beauty that they are. My mom was visiting over the weekend and commented that they looked like Stargazer lilies to which I replied that I didn’t really know. You know how it is with plant tags, they end up next to the plant right when you get the plant in the ground and then before long the tag is missing and you have no idea what the plant is. But Mom was right. I Googled ‘Stargazer…

    Gladiolus Season

Ok, so the main gladiolus season really was about two weeks ago however there was one plant that just finished blooming and another is about to be my late bloomer in the garden. Like usual though, I’m a little slow in getting around to documenting what’s occurring most currently in the garden. First up is the species plant, the Gladiolus dalenii (you can see last year’s bloom here): Next was a lovely lavender-pink bloomer: And most recently this brilliant red bloomer: One thing I need to do is relocate the gladiolus that I have currently planted near our front porch. They aren’t deep enough for one, and really they should…

    100 Happy Days: Days 16-23

Day 16: Forgot to take a photo. I had one in mind but Chris went to bed too early for me to do it so I didn’t get around to it. Note to self: take photos early in the day. Day 17: The gardenia bush is blooming its head off right now. In the evening the smell wafts up to the front garden from the back porch where the gardenia is located. Day 18: Harvested a decent amount of tomatoes to nosh on daily. Not enough to can yet. Day 19: Did some gardening in the vegetable garden. Chris was able to finish about half of the perimeter herb beds…
