2nd Day Hike at Eagle Mountain Park

First Day Hikes have become more popular in the last several years, which is very good thing, however we weren’t able to get out and enjoy a hike on the first day of 2016. Chris and I had opted to go up to visit our families in DFW during the latter part of our winter break and that encompassed the New Years holiday. After being cooped up for several days due to various visits with family and cold weather, Chris was itching to go for a hike somewhere on the second day of the year. It was a rather lazy start to that Saturday, enjoying bacon cooked by my mom…

    The Future Gardener

It’s official, we’ve let the toddler loose in the garden! Ok, well, not without some heavy oversight! “No, don’t pull the garlic.” “Mom, how about these radishes?” “Yes, those probably need to be pulled, but just pick the leaves for now.” -Me “Ooh, this dirt-mulch is fun! I wonder what it tastes like?” “These marigolds are past their prime, Mom!” “Kaaalllleee.” “Hey, the pediatrician had these in her office the other day! I know, these can go in my mouth!”

    Thanksgiving

Typically Chris and I like to do something ‘different’ for Thanksgiving each year. It was something we started when we lived in Florida and had to decide about going home during the holidays. After the first year or two we didn’t really go back to Texas all that often, mostly because it wasn’t in our budget to do so. Because four days off at one time is a precious commodity, we usually took advantage of the days to go camping somewhere. I wrote up our Ghosts of Thanksgivings Past back in 2010 when we were stuck in deep East Texas doing field work for Thanksgiving. We worked that day and…

    Family Photos

A few weekends ago we got outside to take some family photos for our upcoming Christmas card. Here’s a few of my favorites from that day. Sometime I would like to hire someone because I’m just not going to be able to take some of the shots with the three of us that I want with a camera on a tripod.

    The Weaning Process: Part I

I started this in early November in hopes of chronicling this weaning journey. Here’s the progress so far. Now that I’m 14 months into this breastfeeding journey with Forest I knew that at some point in time there would be a slow process of weaning. When he turned a year old I opted to drop from pumping four times a day to three. Now I am down to twice a day. This has taken a natural progression over the last two months in an uptake in Forest’s eating of solid food as well as stretching out his nursing sessions with me due to his increased activity around the house—‘No time…

    Busy, Busy, Little Bee

Last year’s Halloween was a bit last minute. I scrambled at Target to find a Tigger outfit when most of the other costumes were gone. This year I planned earlier and started looking in September. We ended up settling on a bee costume this year and not long after I thought about having Chris and I wearing our bee suits to go along with the theme. When I mentioned it to Chris he said he had thought of the same thing! Our little town has a yearly costume contest and hayride trick-or-treating set up so this year we participated in that. Forest won 3rd place in the boy’s 0-2 year…

    Party Time!

Growing up we didn’t have a lot of birthday parties. My parents didn’t always have a lot of extraneous money so most birthdays were quiet family affairs. Even so, I’m still not a big party person (hello, introvert) but I knew that I definitely wanted to have a big bash for Forest’s first birthday. Since Forest’s birthday is so close to Labor Day here in the US we will always have a good option for throwing a party or doing a little weekend getaway as a little family. For Forest’s first birthday we kept it pretty simple inviting my mom and dad, Chris’ mom and step-dad, and Chris’ dad and…

    First Birthday

Alright, strap yourself in! This is going to be one photo heavy post! If one is going to go all out with photos, a first birthday is a great excuse to do so. Chris and I took the day off to spend with Forest for his first birthday. One thing I’ve hated in this last year is how little time we really get to spend with him during the week and I think prioritizing moments like this is important if it is accesible to us. We woke up about our usual time this morning, 6:45 am, and took some time to wake up and get moving around the house. Forest…
